The Pyrmont Place development by Landream represents a significant urban renewal project in Sydney’s inner harbour, connected to the new Sydney Fish Market and the transformation of Blackwattle Bay.
The development will transform a former quarry and council depot, unused for nearly a century, into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood that aligns with the NSW Government’s Blackwattle Bay transformation.
Award-winning architectural firm BVN has designed the project to celebrate the area’s rich sandstone legacy and industrial heritage.
“This project represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to breathe new life into one of Sydney’s historic locations,” says Chris Pratt, Head of Development NSW.
“Pyrmont Place will deliver world-class residences while creating significant public amenity and connectivity in this part of the harbour.”
Located at 14–26 Wattle Street, the Pyrmont Place site is steeped in history. Sandstone quarried here was used in some of Sydney’s most iconic buildings.
“The area has a unique history that offers many layers of inspiration,” says Phillip Rossington, BVN Principal.
“Our scheme embraces Pyrmont’s history and diverse character through evocative, contemporary architecture and urban design, activating an enticing work-meets-lifestyle hub with open spaces, recreation facilities and family-friendly amenities.”
BVN’s design pays homage to this heritage by blending contemporary elements with materials and forms that reflect the site’s natural history.
The practice’s understanding of the Pyrmont and Blackwattle Bay precincts ensures valuable synergy for Pyrmont Place, with exceptional architecture and best-practice insights shaping the project.
At the core of BVN’s architectural vision is a commitment to celebrate the site’s unique geological and industrial past.
The development features three residential towers and one commercial building, each with distinctive façade treatments that reference the quarried sandstone once extracted from this very location. These structures will harmonise with the surrounding landscape, with design elements that reflect the site’s rich history.
BVN’s design approach goes beyond aesthetics to forge meaningful connections with Pyrmont’s industrial legacy. The materiality of each building tells a story of place – from the exposed textured concrete that echoes cut sandstone to the copper and metallic elements that reference the area’s working past.
The development will deliver 237 premium apartments across multiple buildings. Residents will enjoy exceptional amenities including communal landscaped terraces with harbour and park views, an outdoor pool and shared facilities, such as a gym, yoga and pilates space, music room, working from home pods and a private dining pod with chef’s kitchen.
A 91-place childcare centre will support young families in the precinct, while recreational spaces and functional outdoor areas foster a sense of community.
The development’s strategic location places residents within easy reach of multiple transport options, including the Wentworth Park Light Rail stop and the future Pyrmont Metro West station. This connectivity enhances Pyrmont Place’s position as a key development in Sydney’s evolving transport network.
OCULUS has designed the landscape to integrate seamlessly with the architecture. The design includes extensive green spaces featuring native plants that will provide natural cooling, improve air quality, and create an urban sanctuary for residents and visitors alike.
The sandstone cliff face below Jones Street will be preserved, with viewing windows allowing passers-by to connect with Pyrmont’s storied past.
Two main pathways will open up views and create accessible routes that honour Pyrmont’s history and enhance public access, helping to create a vibrant new neighbourhood on the edge of Blackwattle Bay and contributing to Sydney’s evolving ‘innovation corridor’ and ‘walkable city’ plans.
The interior vision for Pyrmont Place complements its architectural themes, blending a fresh, modern style that flows naturally from the development’s exteriors into the interiors. Using natural materials and sustainable finishes, residences are functional and beautiful, creating inviting and contemporary spaces that deeply connect to the site’s history.
A choice of two-colour palettes, Cirrus and Terra, reflect the iconic land and skyscapes beyond Pyrmont Place. Cirrus features lighter, airy hues of cloud whites, soft grey and light oak cabinetry. The earthier Terra mixes darker timber cabinetry and moody grey stone. Brushed nickel, timber floors, and warm white complement both palettes.
The understated look and feel of each residence is purposefully designed. Living spaces are clear and free-flowing, unhindered by superfluous detailing, tasteful, simple, and adaptable to individual style preferences.
In the kitchen, this considered approach is realised with the pantry space and high-end Gaggenau and Liebherr appliances neatly integrated into timber-look laminate joinery. The marble slab island bench subtly mirrors the precinct’s carved historic cliff face.
In bathrooms, the vanity’s characterful marbling contrasts with textured porcelain in softer tones throughout. Naturally serene finishes embody a place to be soothed and revived, inside and out.
The $900 million development is a significant investment in Sydney’s inner harbour. Landream expects to commence construction in mid-2025, with the first residents moving in by early-2028.
